On January 1, 2007 Ontario’s Ethanol in Gasoline Regulation came into effect. The Regulation requires fuel producers and importers to have an annual average of five per cent ethanol in the gasoline they sell in Ontario. What fuel quality standards does the ethanol need to meet?Low-level (i.e., 3-10%) ethanol blends are required to meet the most current version of the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) standard, “Oxygenated Unleaded Automotive Gasoline Containing Ethanol” (CAN/CGSB 3.511). For additional flexibility, the Regulation also permits the ethanol that meets the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standard, “Denatured Fuel Ethanol for Blending with Gasolines for Use as Automotive Spark-Ignition Engine Fuel” (ASTM D4806-04a). |
